The Department of Conservation (DOC) received a significant funding boost in 2018 of $181.6 million over four years. This is one of the biggest funding increases that DOC has ever received, and it will benefit New Zealand’s native plants, wildlife and natural landscapes. $76 million of this funding is for biodiversity initiatives across land, freshwater and marine ecosystems, which means that DOC’s Biodiversity Group is expanding in order to deliver its ambitious new work programme.
Two Freshwater Manager roles have been created within the Aquatic Unit. Both roles require candidates with strong leadership experience including people leadership, strategy, financial management, planning and programme management. Applications will be welcomed from candidates with a strong match to the leadership requirementsof these roles who also have a good working knowledge of, or experience in, areas relevant to biodiversity, freshwater ecology or environmental science.
One Freshwater Manager will lead the North Island technical and science advisory team and the other will lead the South Island team. Each team is focused on protecting and restoring aquatic species and ecosystems across freshwater domains.
These are excellent opportunities for experienced managers to lead the teams working on some of the more complex and challenging conservation issues facing New Zealand.
The roles require candidates with the necessary experience to lead research, science and knowledge programmes and advice, and with the ability to lead others to translate and communicate science and research outputs. Candidates will have experience of working in partnership with iwi and an understanding of Māori Tikanga and protocols and Mātauranga Māori, as well as a track record of strong relationship-building, connecting and collaborating, both internally and externally,
The preferred locations for these roles are Hamilton, Wellington, Christchurch or Dunedin.
